Lightbulbs As The New Wi-Fi Hotspots · 07:00 PM

The next generation of wireless communications technology could be based on visible light instead of radio waves.

Imagine data communications piggybacking on low-power light emitting diodes (LEDs) to give us Smart Lighting which would be faster and more secure than our current network technology.

Well, this is exactly what the College of Engineering a Boston University is researching.

The researchers are working to develop an optical communication technology that would make an LED light the equivalent of a Wi-Fi access point.

“Imagine if your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires. This could be done with an LED-based communications network that also provides light – all over existing power lines with low power consumption, high reliability and no electromagnetic interference. Ultimately, the system is expected to be applicable from existing illumination devices, like swapping light bulbs for LEDs.” – Professor Thomas Little, BU Engineering.

Scientists Develop "Terminator" Eyecam · 11:56 AM

Researchers at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University are in the process of developing a camera with a design that is similar in size and shape to the human eye.

According to the University of Illinois, “The eye camera is based on “single-crystalline silicon detectors and electronics, configured in a stretchable, interconnected mesh.”

The curved technology will put an entire image in focus, plus could bring the Terminator-type bionic eye one step closer to a reality.

The mesh-like material is made up of an array of tiny squares that hold the photodetectors and electronic components and allows the structure to curve like the eye.
